This year marks the centenary of the discovery of insulin, a reason that given its importance should be commemorated with the issuance of a multitude of coins, but the usual thing is that each country only issues coins if they have some connection with their nation, something which I personally consider a mistake.
The discovery of insulin has saved millions of lives, and should be more than enough reason for not only Canada, because of its links to this discovery, to issue a circulation coin (there are actually two, one colored and the other not). Maybe between now and the end of the year we have some more and the truth is that it would be well deserved.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes was a death sentence. Starvation diets were used to delay the deadly symptoms of diabetes, but the death of the patient was inevitable. Beginning on May 17, 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best, under the direction of JJR Macleod, isolated what would later become known as insulin in a laboratory at the University of Toronto. Its extract was purified and made safe for human injection by James Collip. Thirteen-year-old Leonard Thompson was selected to receive the first human trial, the results of which would go on to save the lives of millions of people around the world.
Designed by Canadian artist Jesse Koreck, the two colored and uncolored $ 2 coins feature the same design, representing an insulin monomer and scientific instruments used in the first formulation of insulin (flask, mortar, and Erlenmeyer flask) superimposed on a maple leaf, as well as red blood cells, glucose, and insulin molecules. The words 'INSULIN' and 'INSULINE' appear on the outer ring of the coin, as well as the years '1921' and '2021', marking the anniversary.
