The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) has launched a special collection of ₡100 colones (approximately €0.17) coins dedicated to celebrating events declared intangible cultural heritage of the country. This new series begins with a piece alluding to swing criollo , a dance style emblematic of Costa Rican identity.

The collection, called "Intangible Cultural Heritage ," will include six coins representing different national traditions: Creole swing , Limon calypso , Chorotega ceramics, the ox and cart tradition, cimarrona music , and Liberian bullfighting .

Two versions: colored and uncolored

The first piece, dedicated to the Creole swing , will be available in two versions. One is a collectible coin with a colored design , available in a case or acrylic, priced at ₡9,000 colones (approximately €15.30). The other is a regular circulation coin , colorless, intended for use as a means of payment, with a face value of ₡100.

On the obverse, both versions feature the inscriptions "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica," along with four raised bars for easy tactile recognition. The reverse features the name "Swing Criollo" and an illustration of dancers Ligia Torijano Chacón and Wálter Morales Zamora performing a characteristic step of the genre. On the collectible version, the image is enhanced with colors that evoke the festive atmosphere of a dance hall.

Criollo swing emerged in the mid-20th century in the dance halls of San José, as a fusion of cumbia and 1950s American swing. It originated in a marginalized context but soon expanded to become a recognized art form throughout the country. In 2012, it was declared an intangible cultural heritage by the National Commission of Intangible Cultural Heritage (CONAPACI).

The next coins in the series

Following the Creole swing coin , the collection will continue with five other pieces dedicated to Limón calypso , Chorotega ceramics, the tradition of oxen and oxcarts, cimarrona music , and Liberian bullfighting , which will be presented progressively over the coming months.

With this collection, the BCCR seeks to immortalize the traditions that are part of Costa Rica's cultural richness, fostering respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
