Amid growing global concern about the effects of climate change, the Bank of Greece recently issued a new 6-euro silver proof coin in honor of the International Year for Glacier Preservation 2025.
Glaciers are essential components of the climate system and the global hydrological cycle. Approximately 68% of the planet's freshwater is stored in the form of snow, ice, and glaciers, which together make up the Earth's cryosphere. This frozen mass plays a key role in regulating global temperature, the Earth's energy balance, and the supply of freshwater in many regions of the world.
Climate change is causing an accelerated retreat of glaciers, resulting in a significant reduction in the cryosphere. Although glaciers contain approximately 2% of the planet's total water, their melting has profound and multidimensional consequences. These include rising average sea levels, altered precipitation patterns, water scarcity in watersheds dependent on seasonal melting, and declining agricultural productivity in vulnerable areas.
Given this scenario, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2025 the International Year for the Preservation of Glaciers. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the vital importance of glaciers for climate balance and water security, as well as highlight the environmental, economic, and social impacts resulting from their disappearance. It also underscores the urgency of adopting sustainable adaptation and mitigation measures, fostering international cooperation—including cross-border cooperation—and promoting comprehensive and coordinated management of water resources and the cryosphere.
The obverse of the coin features the national coat of arms of Greece in the upper left corner, framing a frozen scene. Above it is the semicircular inscription of the issuing country in Greek: "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic). The lower part of the composition features the face value of the coin: "6 ΕΥΡΩ" (6 EURO), the mint mark, and on the right side, the signature of the engraver, Maria Antonatou.
The obverse of the piece features an artistic composition divided in two, which shows at the bottom a more colorful representation of an iceberg, geometrically portrayed in blue tones. Framing the central design we see the upper inscription "ΔΙΕΘΝΕΣ ΕΤΟΣ ΠΡΟΣΤΑΣΙΑΣ ΤΩΝ ΠΑΓΕΤΩΝΩΝ" (INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR GLACIER CONSERVATION), and at the bottom of the composition, the year of issue "2025".
