The Official Journal of the European Union has confirmed that Vatican City will issue a new 2-euro commemorative coin dedicated to the Sede Vacante in 2025. Although the exact issue date has not been announced, the circulation will be limited to 76,000 pieces.
The Sede Vacante is the period between the end of a pontificate and the election of a new pope. During this time, the cardinal camerlengo assumes responsibility for administering the ordinary affairs of the Holy See and preparing for the conclave in which the successor to Saint Peter is elected. The most recent Sede Vacante culminated with the election of Pope Leo XIV , who was proclaimed pontiff after the conclave was held in the Sistine Chapel.
The design of this coin features the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo, located below the symbol of the Apostolic Chamber: two crossed keys surmounted by a conope. Along the edge of the coin are the inscriptions "CITTA' DEL VATICANO" , "SEDE VACANTE" and "MMXXV" , indicating the year of issue. Between "CITTA' DEL VATICANO" and "SEDE VACANTE" there is also an abstract representation of a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. Beneath the coat of arms, the letter "R" , corresponding to the Mint of Rome, is accompanied by the names of the engraver and the designer of the coin: on the left the engraver and on the right O. ROSSI (Orietta Rossi).
