The Bank of Croatia announced yesterday that its commemorative 2-euro coin, marking the 1,100th anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia and the coronation of King Tomislav , one of the most significant figures in Croatian national history, will be released on Monday, July 14.

A tribute to a founding monarch

The coin celebrates a key moment in medieval Croatian history: the year 925 , when Tomislav was crowned the first king of Croatia , unifying the duchies of Pannonia and Dalmatia into a single kingdom for the first time. This event marked the formal birth of the Kingdom of Croatia , recognized by both the Papacy and other European powers of the time. Tomislav's reign not only represented the consolidation of Croatian territory, but also an important political role in the European context, especially in the face of the advancing Byzantine Empire and Hungarian threats.

Tomislav is considered a symbol of Croatian sovereignty, and his legacy lives on in the national memory. Under his rule, Croatia established itself as an independent and respected state, with a notable military organization and active diplomatic relations.

The Coin

The national side of the coin was designed by sculptor Nikola Vudrag and minted by the Croatian Mint.

The national side of the commemorative coin features King Tomislav on horseback as its main motif. The background of the main motif features the distinctive symbol of Croatia, the Croatian checkerboard, which is part of the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia, established in the Law on the Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem of the Republic of Croatia, as well as on the Flag and Sash of the President of the Republic of Croatia. The coin also features the following inscriptions: "KRALJ TOMISLAV" (King Tomislav), the year of King Tomislav's coronation "925", the issuing country "REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA" (Republic of Croatia), and the year of issue "2025", inscribed circularly along the edge of the coin's core.

The edge of the commemorative coin features the text "O LIJEPA O DRAGA O SLATKA SLOBODO" (Oh beautiful, oh dear, oh sweet freedom) from the Hymn to Liberty, which is an integral part of the pastoral work "Dubravka" by the 17th-century Croatian writer Ivan Gundulić.

Issue and circulation

The currency will be put into circulation on July 14, 2025, although citizen exchange of coins will begin on September 8, 2025.

The coin will be issued in a quantity of 400,000 pieces, of which 382,400 will be available for exchange at banks across the country. The remainder will be sold in various presentations and qualities, which have not been determined at the time of writing.
