On 28 August, the Hungarian Central Bank issued a new brass collector coin to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the medieval reconstruction and consecration of the World Heritage Site of Pannonhalma Abbey and the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the abbey as a site of national remembrance. The coin, with a face value of 3,000 forints, is the 11th coin in a series of thematic coins launched in 2014, which is dedicated to raising awareness of Hungary’s sites of national remembrance.
The Benedictine abbey of Pannonhalma is the cradle of Hungarian Christianity and an important spiritual centre of the country. Its famous school has a history stretching back thousands of years, and one of the largest monastic libraries in the world is located here. The monastery was founded in 996 by Prince Géza in honour of Saint Martin of Tours. Consecrated around 1003, the church burned down several times during the first centuries and had to be rebuilt three times due to historical events.
According to written sources, the church was restored and consecrated 800 years ago, in 1224. Except for brief historical interruptions, the monastery has been home to the Benedictine monastic community for over a millennium. The 800-year-old medieval church, which has survived intact, remains a place of worship for the monks.
Ten years ago, in 2014, the abbey became a national monument of Hungary.
The obverse of the coin shows, in the central field and bordered by a ring, a fragment of the founding charter of the Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma. On the right side of the composition, interrupting the ring, we see a statue by Géza Stremeny depicting Saint Maurus of Pannonhalma, emerging from a pillar of the Basilica of Saint Martin of Pannonhalma. The ring on the edge of the obverse bears the inscription of the name of the issuing country “MAGYARORSZÁG” (HUNGARY), the face value “3000 FORINT”, the year of issue “2024” and the mint mark “BP.
On the other hand, the reverse of the coin depicts the Benedictine abbey complex of Pannonhalma and its surroundings in the central field, bordered by a ring. In the lower area, partially protruding from the ring, is the coat of arms of the Hungarian Benedictines, and on the right side is the mark of the designer of the coin, “Balázs Bitó”. Surrounding the composition are the inscriptions: “PANNONHALMI BENCÉS FŐAPÁTSÁG” (BENEDICTINE ABBEY OF PANNONHALMA) and “NEMZETI EMLÉKHELY” (NATIONAL MONUMENT), separated by the emblem of the national memorials.
