Numismatically speaking, Croatia has reached the euro with great force, the first two coins, with the same design, which have just been put on sale today, April 18, add up to a price of around 4,000 euros. They are very peculiar coins that will have those who like them but also detractors.

The National Bank of Croatia has just put up for sale two coins, one gold and one silver, dedicated to the tie, a recognizable and renowned cultural motif from the popular history of the Republic of Croatia since these are recognized as its inventors. The gold coin is issued in the denomination of 100 euros, and the silver, in the 6 euro.

Let's say that to have the complete coin you would have to buy both, since one fits into the other as you can see in the image.

The design of the coins is the work of sculptor Nikola Vudrag. The coins were minted by the Croatian Mint. They have been put up for sale today in a limited quantity of just 500 pieces.

The “Tie Contour” issue (the name given to the coins) consists of two pieces of different shapes, made of different precious metals, gold and silver. The gold coin is issued with a face value of 100 euros and weighs one ounce (31.103 grams), while the silver coin is issued with a face value of 6 euros and weighs two ounces of silver (62.207 grams). The gold coin follows the shape of a tie and is inserted into the silver coin, forming a single piece.

The reverse of the coin shows Croatian soldiers who fought under the French flag in the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. Around their necks they wore a handkerchief, better known today as a necktie, which immediately attracted the attention of the French, and the fact that even the young French King Louis XIV began wearing the necktie speaks volumes for its acceptance. After him, all the French quickly adopted it and wore it “à la croate”, that is, in the Croatian way, and this same inscription adorns the coin, as a kind of homage to this iconic item of fashion and culture.

The theme of the tie also extends to the case in which the coin is kept. The tie-motif packaging bears the signature of designer Izvorka Jurić, who has played on this strong symbolism and given it a contemporary interpretation. The boxes are made by hand, and this is what hides their uniqueness; each specimen is imperfect in its own way.
