The Tiger Project is a tiger conservation program launched in 1973 by the Government of India during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The project aims to ensure a viable population of the Bengal tiger in its natural habitats, protect it from extinction and preserve areas of biological importance as natural heritage that represent the diversity of ecosystems throughout the range of the tiger in the country.
India is currently home to 75% of the planet's tigers. In the last 100 years, the tiger has lost more than 93 percent of its historical geographic range and now only survives in scattered populations in 13 countries.
During the 50 years of Project Tiger, the number of tiger reserves in India has grown from the initial nine to 51 today. India is believed to have had a tiger population of around 40,000 at the time of independence from Britain in 1947.
Currently, India has 3,167 tigers registered, in 2019 there were 2,977 and in 2006 there were 1,411. Thanks to this project, it has been possible to significantly increase the number of animals and save this cat, which at some point was said to be extinct by the year 2000.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this amount and successful conservation programme, the Government of India has issued a commemorative collector's coin.
The reverse of the coin shows the image of a Tiger in the center of the coin. The dates “1973 – 2023” and the legends “व्याघ्र परियोजना के 50 वर्ष” and “50 YEARS OF PROJECT TIGER” appear on almost the entire outer semicircle of the coin.
The obverse of the coin features the capital of the lion of Ashoka in the center, with the legend "सत्यमेव जयते" inscribed below, to the left and right, the name of the issuing country "भारत" and "INDIA", with the rupee symbol “₹” and face value “50” at the bottom.
