10 euro coin with a square shape in silver

The bath of the horse 1909

On the obverse, the work titled The Horse's Bath is reproduced in color. With its dazzling light, its white tones and the beaches of Valencia, it is undoubtedly one of the painter's most significant canvases and one of Sorolla's most respected and popular works. Sorolla turns this simple everyday scene into a monumental painting: a boy, probably the son of a fisherman, comes out of the sea leading the horse that he had taken into the water to cool off. The intense light, the shine of the skin of the horse and of the boy, and the reflections of the water on the edge of the arena show the level of mastery and enjoyment that Sorolla had achieved in painting him in 1909, one of the culminating moments of his career.

Coming out of the bath 1915

On the back is reproduced the work titled Leaving the bathroom. This canvas, painted in Valencia, shows a woman drying a naked child, which she wraps in an impressive white cloth. The intense midday sun falls vertically on the cloth, filling the painting with light; one of the hallmarks of Sorolla's style was precisely his ability to deal with the blinding light of the Mediterranean summer. The simplicity of the scene and the theme allowed Sorolla to devote all his attention to the formal execution of the painting.

Walk on the seashore 1909

The obverse reproduces in color the work titled «Paseo a la orilla del mar». This is one of the most representative works of the painter: a scene that represents an "elegant walk", as was customary on the northern beaches, transferred to Valencia beach. The water and sand on the beach come to life with long brushstrokes, serving as a backdrop for the figures of his wife and daughter María, who walk around dressed in white, Sorolla's famous white, while the breeze ruffles their dresses and headdresses. . The photographic framing, which cuts through Clotilde's wide-brimmed hat and leaves an empty strip of sand, brings modernity to the work.

The sloop 1909

On the back is reproduced the work entitled El sloop. It is one of Sorolla's best-known paintings, painted in a summer of great pictorial production, with marine themes, where the light, the sand on the beach, the sea water and the figures stand out, with an increasingly pasty and loose In these paintings, Sorolla reduces the horizon more and more until it disappears, as in this painting, thus eliminating the sensation of depth and concentrating on the figure and depth of the water.
