I can now reveal the design and issue data of the first 2 euro commemorative coin that the Vatican issues in 2021. As already announced, the coin is dedicated to celebrating the "450th Anniversary of the birth of Caravaggio." We are going to know the date on which it is issued, the different presentations together with its issue volumes and price at which it will be available to subscribers to Vatican numismatic issues.

The announced issue date is June 25, and it is on sale in two qualities, FDC and Proof, at a price for subscribers of 18 and 37 euros respectively, plus the subsequent shipping costs.

Michelangelo Merisi, born in 1571 and died in 1610, was known as "Caravaggio" after the name of the village in the province of Bergamo where he had lived since he was a child. His painting is one of the highest expressions of art of all time, puzzling and exciting. To celebrate the 450th anniversary of his birth, the Vatican City State issues a two-euro coin by Chiara Principe and Uliana Pernazza.

The image presented on the coin is that of the painting entitled "Child with a Basket of Fruit", a painting made by Caravaggio in 1593 and exhibited in the galleries of the Borghese Gallery in Rome. Caravaggio made this painting during his stay in Rome, after having worked as an apprentice in Simone Peterzano's workshop; The work, even if it is from its youth, is already extraordinary for its analytical precision and for the sensitivity of natural notes with which the life of the fruits represented in the basket is evoked.
