In recent times I am discovering the beauty of the coins that are minted in Hungary, until now I had not paid much attention to these, but lately each new piece that they issue attracts more my attention, in fact if you follow the blog regularly you will have seen that I have presented several recently. The last one that has just been issued is dedicated to the "175th anniversary of the birth of Pál Szinyei Merse", in which two works by this famous Hungarian painter are very successfully represented.

Pál Szinyei Merse was one of the pioneers of modern Hungarian painting, who established his own school. The cool color scheme of plein-air (painting done outdoors) and the light and easy elegance of impressionism are present in his art. Since the 1890s, generations have admired him as their teacher. No other artist or movement has had a greater impact on modern Hungarian painting than the art of Pál Szinyei Merse.

The Bank of Hungary has issued a silver coin for collectors of 10,000 guilders and a cupronickel version of 2,000 forint, both with the same design, by Borbála Szanyi, designed to honor the 175th anniversary of his birth and to remember him this year in that it is also 100 years since his death.

The central motif on the obverse is based on one of the most original ideas of Pál Szinyei Merse. The sphere motif present in his 1882 painting called The Globe and a Flying Human Figure symbolize freedom in art and thought. The inscription MAGYARORSZÁG (Hungary) and the denominations 10,000 FORINT or 2,000 FORINT are found in the lower field on three separate vertical lines. Denomination figures mimic the shape of a hot air balloon. On the left of the globe, the mint mark "BP" and the one of the year 2020 are shown in micro letters that contain security elements.

On the back is the 1897 painting by Pál Szinyei Merse, Önarckép bőrkabátban (Self-portrait with a leather jacket). The choice of motif promotes the educational role of the coins, since the portrait of the painter is little known. The reverse, in an unusual representation, shows the letters as if they were carved in the trees: on the left, the letters SZINYEI MERSE PÁL and the years 1845-1920 that refer to the birth and death of the painter, and on the right, the Borbála Szanyi's master brand, the designer of the coin.
