As more and more countries do, knowing the business generated by the commemorative 2-euro coins, they first issue the versions in superior qualities and presentations, and once they have sold all or part of them, it is when they put into circulation the intended for this purpose. Yesterday, the 16th, it was Greece who issued the coins destined for collectors of their second 2-euro coin commemorating 2020 under the name "100 years since the incorporation of Thrace into Greece". For circulation we must wait for a date yet to be determined.

After the end of the First World War and the Neuilly Treaty (1919), Western Thrace was ceded to Greece. In 1920, the Greek army triumphantly entered Thrace, which has since been a part of the Greek state.

The coin designed by Georgios Stamatopoulos, has as its central motif a replica of an ancient Greek coin, a Thetrobol or a Mat, minted during the 3rd or 4th century BC in the rich city of Abdera in Thrace. In it stands out a griffin, a mythological half lion and half eagle that was adopted by Abdera as an emblem for his coinage. Around next to the palm, as a mark of the Greek mint, and the year of issue "2020", there are the legends of the issuing country "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic), and the commemorative "100 XPONIA AΠO THN ENΣΩMATΩΣH THΣ ΘPAKHΣ" ( 100 years since the incorporation of Thrace into Greece). The design author's monogram Georgios Stamatopoulos appears just below the front legs of the tap.
