The British Royal Mint does not wait to make known and put on sale the coins for "circulation" of the year that has just begun. From the very dawn of today, January 1, he has shown us the designs of the five new commemorative pieces that for now can only be acquired within the different sets together with the regular 2020 circulation coins, presented in different qualities and prices. Let's look at the five novelties in the order of their facial value.

50 Pence - Olympic Team Great Britain Tokyo 2020

The first coin has a 50 pence facial and with it we want to provide support and recognition to the Great Britain Olympic Team that will participate this year, from July 24 to August 9, at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Since the first modern Games in 1896, where British athletes won seven medals, men and women of Great Britain have set their sights on gold in the biggest sports competition in the world. The GB team continues to exceed the limits and, for the first time, the team is expected to select more female than male athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The coin shows figures representing representative elements of different Olympic sports, accompanied by the Olympic rings, the logo of the Olympic Team of Great Britain, the inscription TEAM GB and the date 2020. The initials DK, corresponding to its designer, are also shown. David Knapton

2 pounds –Agatha Christie

The first, of the three 2-pound commemorative coins, is dedicated to Agatha Christie and serves to commemorate the centenary of her first novel The Mysterious Affair At Styles.

As the author of 66 detective novels and 150 stories, it is not surprising that Agatha Christie is known as the Queen of Crime. Born in 1890, in Torquay, Devon, her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles , was published in 1920 and, with her vision and ingenuity, defined the genre of the murder mystery.

The coin shows an almost complete puzzle with the final piece about to be inserted, accompanied by the inscription "1920 100 YEARS OF THE MYSTERY 2020" and the signature of Agatha Christie. A gun, a bottle of poison and other icons related to one of the most successful criminal fiction authors in the world are also shown.

2 pounds - 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Journey

Another of the new 2-pound commemorative coins serves to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower trip, a ship that transported 102 men, women and children from Plymouth, England, to Provincetown, Massachusetts, United States.

When 102 passengers set sail on the Mayflower from Plymouth, England, on September 16, 1620, their eyes were on a new beginning. They arrived in Plymouth Bay more than three months later and in spring, slightly less than half of those who set sail came to survive in the New World more than a year due to illness. The original 'Thanksgiving' party was held that fall, after its first successful harvest of the lands. The spirit of these Mayflower pilgrims endures in this national celebration to this day.

The coin shows a representation of the Mayflower with the inscription «MAYFLOWER» and the dates «1620 2020», accompanied by the initials of its designer, the American Chris Costello, completing the composition.

2 pounds - VE Day (Victory Day in Europe)

The last of the 2-pound commemorative coins celebrates the beginning of the end of World War II, as 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

On May 8, 1945, now known as VE Day, saw the beginning of the end of World War II, the conflict that claimed the lives of millions of people and reformulated the future of countries and continents. Seventy-five years later, Victory Day in Europe (VE) is remembered for the last of the generations that was there and celebrated by the many generations that came later. In 2020, we remember the first and hopeful steps towards lasting peace.

In the coin, a woman is shown in the foreground holding a newspaper high up in a crowd of people celebrating the end of the war with the legend VICTORY presiding over the scene. The inscription "VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY" and the dates "1945 - 2020" appear on the gold ring.

In honor of the 200 years since the end of the reign of King George III, and the 40 years in which he held the throne, this 5-pound coin is issued.

George III arrived at the throne in 1760, being the first monarch of Hannover that was born in Great Britain and spoke English as first language. Controversial, he is often known for the mental illness that plagued his last years and as the king who lost the American colonies, but there was much more in this thoughtful and dedicated monarch. In the year 200 since his death, his reign and legacy is celebrated.

Along with a representation of the former crowned monarch, accompanied by the floral emblems of the United Kingdom, the coin features illustrations of the Copper Horse monument, a statue of the horse king that is located on the grounds of Windsor Castle, and the Observatory of the King in Greenwich, which he commissioned.
