More and more eurozone countries are seeking to do business with commemorative two-euro coins. What began as a common practice among microstates has now spread to countries of all sizes, seeking to profit from a currency designed to be a common heritage. The latest to join this trend is Finland. While its coins were already selling at above-average prices in previous years, this year they have reached a new level: even the cheapest version is being launched on the market for 9 euros. The issue, limited to 204,000 units, will not be issued into circulation and has begun to be sold today, May 13, 2025, through the Helsinki Mint, the entity responsible for distributing Finnish coins since this year.
The Coin
The piece pays tribute to the role Finland has played on the international stage, highlighting its strong commitment to diplomacy, dialogue, and cooperation among nations. Titled "State Visits from Finland – Diplomacy and Foreign Policy ," this is the first of two commemorative issues planned by the country this year.
The coin features a contemporary and symbolic design. In the center, an abstract door-shaped figure represents the idea of openness and encounter that characterizes state visits. This figure appears as a mirror-finished rectangle, with the mintmark, the year "2025," and the code "FI" arranged vertically along the left edge. The top of the rectangle is rounded and follows the curvature of the coin's edge. At the bottom right, the surface is furrowed with horizontal lines, while a circular shape cuts through the curve of the image, creating an interesting visual interplay.

In addition to this coin, Finland plans to issue another commemorative coin in the fall, dedicated to the centenary of the Finland-Sweden athletics competition. We don't yet know its design or circulation, but the recently issued coin gives us an idea.
