On May 22, 2025 , the Swiss Mint, Swissmint , will issue a new 20-franc commemorative coin in pure silver dedicated to the celebrated Swiss artist Jean Tinguely , to mark the centenary of his birth. This piece pays tribute to one of the most influential creators of contemporary Swiss art, internationally renowned for his kinetic sculptures and poetic moving machines.
Born in Fribourg in 1925 , Jean Tinguely left an indelible mark on the art world through his irreverent, playful, and deeply innovative approach. Throughout his career, he used recycled materials and complex mechanisms to create works that combine humor, movement, sound, and social criticism . His singular vision broke the mold of traditional art, and his legacy continues to influence generations of contemporary artists. Tinguely collaborated numerous times with Niki de Saint Phalle , with whom he shared both his personal and artistic life, forming one of the most iconic creative partnerships of the 20th century.
The commemorative coin reflects the spirit of his work in both its design and symbolism. The obverse depicts a section of Heureka , one of his most iconic sculptures, created for the 1964 Swiss National Exhibition in Lausanne and currently housed in Zurich. The complex network of interlocking wheels and gears that characterizes this piece perfectly illustrates Tinguely's aesthetic: a celebration of movement, organized chaos, and mechanics as a form of artistic expression.
Above the design, the name "Jean Tinguely" appears in a collage style , evoking one of his favorite techniques. The year 1925 is also highlighted , marking the beginning of a life dedicated to art and celebrating his centennial in 2025.
The reverse of the coin features a linear portrait of the artist, rendered with stylized contours that directly echo the visual language of his sculptures. This restrained yet expressive representation connects with Tinguely's creative universe, in which lines, shapes, and moving structures intertwine to create an art that is constantly evolving.
