A small, 32-millimeter silver disc holds a story that changed Poland… and the world. It's not just a coin. It's memory, it's gratitude, it's a silent symbol of the collective courage of a people who said "enough."
On April 25, 2025 , the Bank of Polinia issued a commemorative coin to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Solidarity trade union . At first glance, it's a beautiful piece: hands raised in victory, a sea of protesters in the background, the Solidarity emblem that remains recognizable for generations. But behind that design lies something much deeper.
A strike that sparked a revolution
In August 1980, something extraordinary happened in communist Poland: more than 700,000 workers across the country went on strike. They weren't asking for luxuries or power. They were asking for dignity, better living conditions, and something as basic as a say in their future. That cry grew into an organization, and thus was born Solidarity, the first independent trade union in the Eastern Bloc.
The coin commemorates that decisive moment, when a group of workers at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdańsk defied what seemed immovable. With the signing of the August Agreements, the monopoly on power was broken, and the long road to democracy began.
More than a coin
Designed by Robert Kotowicz and minted in silver, this 10-zloty coin, with a proof finish and color accents, is limited to 9,000 pieces. Each one is a tangible testament to a story of resilience and hope.
The reverse of the coin features the 45th anniversary logo, accompanied by the commemorative slogan and two hands forming the victory sign, all against a stylized background of a crowd of protesters. It's a powerful image that encapsulates the collective spirit of the movement.
The obverse , meanwhile, features the white eagle , the emblem of the Polish state, along with the waving Polish flag and the iconic "Solidarity" logo. A design that fuses national identity with social struggle.
Today, 45 years later, "Solidarity" remains more than just a word. It's a reminder that freedom is built on courage, unity, and memory. And this small but powerful coin bears witness to that.
