Did you know that Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture in 2025? This German city, rich in industrial history and with a vibrant arts scene, is gearing up for a year packed with cultural events. And since every major event deserves a special celebration, Germany has minted a commemorative 20-euro silver coin that will surely stand out!

A numismatic gem for collectors and culture lovers

This is no ordinary coin. Crafted in sterling silver and featuring a symbolic design, it is both a collector's item and a tangible tribute to European culture. It weighs 18 grams, has a diameter of 32.5 millimeters, and will be available in two versions: one in circulation quality and a limited edition in Proof quality for the most discerning.

The work is designed by Hagen Täuscher, and the minting is carried out by the Hamburg Mint. It will be officially launched on May 15, 2025.

A design that tells a story

The most striking feature of this coin is its artistic side. On the obverse, you'll find a series of circular segments depicting some of Chemnitz's most iconic landmarks: from its opera house and town hall to the famous Karl Marx monument. Nine of these elements form a "C," the city's initial, which also serves as a visual symbol of identity.

The stars accompanying each segment connect the local message to the European context, while a representation of the city map and the "2025" logo stand out in the center. It's literally a visual tour of what makes Chemnitz special.

The reverse features the classic federal eagle, surrounded by the EU stars, the year of issue, the face value, and the name of the country. And as a final touch: the edge of the coin bears the inscription "C THE UNSEEN," the official motto of Chemnitz 2025, engraved in both directions.

A symbol for an unforgettable year

Beyond collecting, this coin captures the spirit of what it means to be the European Capital of Culture: diversity, shared heritage, and a fresh approach to what often goes unnoticed. In fact, the chosen motto—"C THE UNSEEN"—invites us to discover the cultural richness that isn't always visible.

Throughout 2025, Chemnitz will host more than a thousand cultural events, from exhibitions to concerts, performances, and festivals. It will be a great showcase for its transformation and creativity to the rest of Europe.

Where to get it?

Starting May 15, 2025, this coin will be available to the public in Germany. The standard version will cost the same as its face value (€20), while the collector's edition, with a Proof finish and limited mintage, will be available for a higher price.
