On May 15, 2025, the United States Mint will issue the twenty-eighth American Innovation Series one-dollar coin , dedicated to the state of Florida. This commemorative piece pays tribute to the space shuttle program and the historic relationship between this technological advancement and the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral.Florida, birthplace of the space shuttle program
For more than 30 years, the Kennedy Space Center was the heart of NASA's Space Shuttle program. All 135 shuttle missions launched from there, many of which also returned to their landing sites. This center was much more than a launch pad: it housed the hangars, maintenance equipment, control centers, and facilities that enabled some of the most ambitious missions in space history.
A tribute to Florida's pioneering spirit
The coin's reverse design features a NASA space shuttle taking off from Launch Complex 39 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Smoke from the solid-fuel rockets fills the lower edges of the design, with stars in the background. The inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "FLORIDA."
Designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse features the same design common to the entire series, featuring the image of the Statue of Liberty in profile and the inscriptions "$1" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
The coins in this series show the year of minting or issue, the mint mark and the text “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (out of many, one) on the edge of the coins.
