Luxembourg's two commemorative 2-euro coins for this year were issued on May 5. They are dedicated to the "25th Anniversary of the Accession to the Throne of Grand Duke Henri" and the "75th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration."

Luxembourg continues to fully exploit the commercial potential of the euro, issuing multiple versions of the same currency with the aim of increasing its sales and revenue. It is undoubtedly one of the countries that has best managed to turn the single currency into a profitable business.

Luxembourg's strategy is already well-known: commemorative coins with different mint marks, variations in imagery, diverse minting techniques, and even elements like holograms. But this year, it has gone a step further: it has begun issuing colorized versions.

The Coins

25th Anniversary of Grand Duke Henri's Accession to the Throne

Grand Duke Henri ascended the throne of Luxembourg on 7 October 2000, succeeding his father, Grand Duke Jean. This 25th anniversary marks a quarter of a century of the Grand Duke's leadership and service to the country, distinguished by his commitment to democracy, national unity, and sustainable development.

At the center of the coin is a detailed portrait of Grand Duke Henri, which dominates the design and symbolizes his leadership and role in Luxembourg's modern history. Behind the portrait is an iconic Luxembourg building, the Grand Ducal Palace, which represents the tradition and historical continuity of the Luxembourgish monarchy. The top of the coin features the inscription in Luxembourgish: "25. TROUNJUBILÄUM VUM GROUSSHERZOG HENRI" , meaning "25th Anniversary of the Accession to the Throne of Grand Duke Henri." The bottom of the coin features the name of the country, "LËTZEBUERG" (Luxembourg in Luxembourgish), along with the year of issue, 2025.

So far, the Coincard versions have been issued, 5,000 of each, one with the normal coin and the other with the colored version.

75th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration

The second commemorative coin celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a pivotal milestone in European history. On May 9, 1950, Robert Schuman, then French Foreign Minister, presented a plan for the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which laid the foundation for the European Union. This declaration symbolizes the reconciliation and cooperation among European nations following World War II.

On the left side of the coin, a large "75" stands out, symbolizing the years since the Schuman Declaration (1950-2025). In the center of the coin, a hand holding a quill shaped like an olive branch represents the moment of signing. This represents the reconciliatory spirit of the Schuman Declaration and its impact on building a united Europe. Above the hand, stars and doves are in flight, symbolizing the European Union and the peace achieved between European countries after World War II. At the top, the inscription "DECLARATION SCHUMAN 09.05.1950" appears, commemorating the date on which Robert Schuman presented his historic plan. On the right, the inscription "LUXEMBOURG 2025" indicates the issuing country and the year of issue of the coin. At the bottom left, a small crown with the letter "H" appears, referring to Grand Duke Henri, reinforcing the connection between Luxembourg and the European project.

Some more facts and a tip

Remember that the total issue volume is 136,000 of each coin, including the colored ones. The coins will also be sold individually and included in the 2025 Euroset along with the rest of the circulation coins. There will also be a Proof version. Add to that, there will be different mint marks. The idea is to squeeze the collectors to the limit by selling the same coin in different versions. My advice: don't participate in this abuse.
