A new coin has just been issued in Portugal, in three versions, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Camilo Castelo Branco's birth.Camilo Castelo Branco (1825–1890) was one of the most prominent writers of 19th-century Portuguese literature. Born on March 16, 1825, in Lisbon, he lived an intense and turbulent life, marked by passionate love, scandals, legal troubles, and a deeply rooted romantic spirit.
From a young age, he showed an interest in literature and became one of the great exponents of Portuguese Romanticism, although his style evolved toward more realistic tones in his later works. He is the author of more than one hundred novels, short stories, essays, and plays. His best-known work is Amor de Perdição (1862), a tragic love story that has become a classic of Portuguese literature.
Camilo had a turbulent personal life: he was sentenced to prison for his relationship with Ana Plácido, a married woman, which inspired several of his novels. His life was also marked by illness, poverty, and the progressive loss of his sight, which led him to commit suicide on June 1, 1890, in São Miguel de Seide.
Two hundred years after his birth, Camilo Castelo Branco is still remembered as a pivotal figure in Portuguese literature, whose work vividly reflects the passions, moral conflicts, and contradictions of his time.
Design common to all three coins
The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Camilo Castelo Branco, clearly recognizable by his bushy mustache, slicked-back hair, and round glasses. The image is executed in relief, with great detail in his facial features. Around the top edge is the inscription “200.º ANIVERSÁRIO DO NASCIMENTO DE CAMILO CASTELO BRANCO,” commemorating the two hundredth anniversary of his birth. To the right of the portrait appear the dates “1825” and “2025,” indicating the bicentennial. Below the image are the author's credits and the issuing institution: “PEDRO CARVALHO – CASA DA MOEDA.”
The obverse features the Portuguese coat of arms in the center, framed by a circular decorative motif that adds emphasis and depth. Surrounding the design, the inscription "PORTUGUESE REPUBLIC" is clearly visible at the top, while the face value of the coin is indicated below: "€5." The design is clean and symmetrical, highlighting the national symbols with sobriety and elegance.
