Year after year the Austrian Mint dedicates its latest issue to a coin with which it wishes us the best for the New Year. By 2022 he has already prepared the piece that on this occasion makes a plea to happiness, symbolized in a beautiful bird.

Happiness is a bird. So says a popular Viennese song of the same title. The metaphor is an expression of the essential truth that happiness is fleeting, fragile, and difficult to maintain.

It is not that we should be discouraged, as it is this very elusiveness that makes happiness worth fighting for and for which we must have the strength and courage to continue to pursue it. This message is especially suitable for the difficult times that we live in today. Fate can force us to take a break, the song continues, which is exactly what has happened to most of us in the past two years, when we've had to put life on hold and be patient. This has also forced us to appreciate the meaning of solidarity, another key message of the song. There is no reason why the bird on the coin is represented with a big heart.

So if you find happiness in 2022, enjoy it while you can, at least until the next time.

The "New Year's Coin" is the last of the year issued by the Austrian Mint and the ninth with this theme. With this and, with all those previously issued, you want to wish a happy year, full of the best wishes for collectors and those who receive it as a gift, something that little by little is becoming a beautiful tradition. Although the official issue date for this 5-euro coin was December 1, its minting date already corresponds to 2022.

The obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the coats of arms of the nine federal provinces of Austria, their face value “5 euros” and the name of the issuing country “Republic of Austria”.

This coin with a face value of 5 euros, like all those that Austria issues in this value, can be purchased in two versions, the copper one at face value and the silver one, presented in the portfolio you see above, at a price of 18, € 60 plus shipping costs, in the virtual store of the Austrian mint.
