The Bank of Latvia has prepared the issue for next Tuesday, November 24, of a coin dedicated to the fossil of the most primitive tetrapod in terrestrial history, the Ventastega curonica, whose discovery occurred in Latvia, and which served to better understand the evolution of the fish to more advanced animals that came out of the water to walk on land.
Fossil remains of the Ventastega curonica, an animal from the Devonian period, were found in rocks in the Venta river basin near Skrunda in Kurzeme. The Ventastega was a four-legged predator, with a length of little more than a meter; lived approximately 365 million years ago. At that time, the territory of present-day Latvia was located a few degrees south of the equator, on the southeastern edge of the Euramerican paleocontinent. The rocks and the fossils of animals and plants that are preserved in them are the only evidence of such ancient times. At present, only a few finds of fossils of Devonian tetrapods are known.
On the obverse of the coin there is a tetrapod Ventastega curonica, emerging from shallow waters to land; Its skeleton is marked with a photoluminescent paint print that makes it glow in the dark.
The passage of time over millions of years has been represented in a stylized way as points and lines, as well as the figure "365,000,000", which corresponds to the estimated number of years that these beings inhabited the earth. It is the composition on the reverse side.
