Although the official issue date for this 5 euro coin is next December 2, its minting date already corresponds to 2021.
The month of January is named after the god Janus. Before every undertaking, the ancient Romans prayed for his blessing. Among other things, he was the god of doors and gates and a conciliator between the past and the present. Janus (Latin Janus) also ruled the dawn. An opulent temple was dedicated to him in Ancient Rome, the gates of which symbolized that peace had ended when they were opened at the start of each new war, allowing the Romans to enter and plead for victory.
The doors of the temple of Janus can be seen in the background of the reverse of the coin, above them a clock with a starry sky and the sun at one end. The central foreground is dominated by an ornate key bearing the year 2021 on its arch. Janus's two faces, one old and bearded, the other much younger, look in opposite directions on either side. The obverse of the nine-sided coin shows the coats of arms of the nine Austrian provinces arranged in a circle.
