In 2019 the Royal Mint began the issuance of a series of four coins, one per year, dedicated to commemorating the V Centenary of the First Round the World. Next Monday, November 23, the second piece of the series will be broadcast, this time dedicated to the passage of the Strait of Magellan.

The expedition of Magellan and Elcano was a 16th century maritime expedition financed by the Spanish Crown and led by Fernando de Magallanes. This expedition, led by Juan Sebastián Elcano on his return, completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth in history, being considered a great achievement in navigation, also assuming a spectacular advance in European understanding of the world.

The second coin focuses on the passage of the Strait of Magellan, an episode in which they cross the Dark Sea, a denomination at that time of the Atlantic Ocean, so called because, even knowing the direction of the winds, they did not know where it could lead them, since there is no inhabited territory beyond and they ran the risk of getting lost in the mist and darkness. In addition, it was thought that there were monsters and mermaids that took the sailors to the bottom of the sea. They arrive on All Saints' Day 1520, November 1, to what would be called the Strait of Magellan, to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean it would take 28 days.

The reverse of the coin reproduces in colors a representation of the Atlantic Ocean as the Dark Sea, with animals and fantastic beings, according to the imagination of explorers and navigators of the 15th and 16th centuries. In the upper left part of the coin, horizontally and in capital letters, the value of the piece 10 EURO; on the right, the mint mark. At the bottom of the coin, in a circular sense and in capital letters, the legend V CENTENARIO DE LA VUELTA AL MUNDO.

On the obverse, two images of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Fernando de Magallanes are reproduced, taken from the portraits of both that are kept in the Naval Museum of Madrid. Above these images, a compass rose. On the right, within an oval, detail of the head of the sculptural work entitled Carlos V, made by Leone and Pompeo Leoni, which is kept in the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid; below, in capital letters, the legend CARLOS V. At the top of the coin, in a circular sense and in capital letters, the legend ESPAÑA 2020. At the bottom of the coin, the legends ELCANO and MAGALLANES, separated by a dash. Occupying the entire bottom of the coin, some lines like a wind grid.
