Yesterday, November 4, the Bank of Lithuania put into circulation and for sale the second commemorative 2-euro coin that Lithuania issues in 2020, dedicated to "The Hill of Crosses", a place whose name in Lithuanian is "Kryziu Kalnas". located 12 kilometers from the city of Siauliai, in northern Lithuania. It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 crosses placed by people for hundreds of years.
The design by Rytas Jonas Belevičiu shows the Hill of Crosses, filled with fragments of forged and wooden crosses, symbolizing Lithuanian craftsmanship and popular culture. The creation and symbolism of crosses in Lithuania are included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2001. At the top of the composition, the inscription LIETUVA (LITHUANIA), the year of issue of the coin 2020, at the bottom, the inscription KRYŽIŲ KALNAS (THE HILL OF CROSSES), next to the mint mark of the Lithuanian Mint "Lietuvos monetų kalyklos".
