Bohorič was born in 1520 in the commercial city of Reichenburg in the Duchy of Styria (now Brestanica in Slovenia). In 1584, he wrote his most notable work, Articae horulae succisivae . The book, written in Latin, was the first grammar of Slovenian and the first Slovenian normative guide. In this work, Bohorič encoded the first Slovenian alphabet, now called the Bohorič alphabet. It was used until the 1840s, when it was replaced by the Latin alphabet of Gaj.
