It has been 75 years since Operation Market Garden, the largest military airborne operation in history, but also the one that led to the greatest military failure of the Allies in the fight with Germany. Royal Dutch Mint Dutch mint wants to honor this anniversary with a commemorative coin.

Operation Market Garden took place in September 1944 during World War II with the aim of taking a series of bridges over the main rivers of the Netherlands under German occupation. This consisted of two parts: the airborne operation (Market) and the ground offensive of Belgium (Garden). It was a bold plan by British quarterback Bernard Montgomery, which was executed by 41,628 people from the English, American and Polish airborne troops and three divisions of ground troops.

It was an ambitious plan, but failed due to bad weather conditions and strong German resistance, especially on the bridge near Arnhem. But there were more reasons for the failure: a distance too large between the air landing zones and the bridges near Arnhem and Nijmegen, communication problems, the difficult advance of the ground forces and the mistakes made in the supreme command.

Today, the Koninklijke Nederlandse online store has put up for sale a commemorative coin dedicated to Operation Market Garden, in different versions but with the same design, which will be issued and therefore sent to its buyers from the next September 21st.

Tim Breukers, the coin designer, was inspired by the Hartenstein Air Museum in Oosterbeek, where embroidered badges and emblems caught his attention, applying these embroideries to the commemorative coin design.

The coin parachute represents the largest air operation ever conducted in Dutch territory. The bridge over the Rhine near Arnhem is also presented, thus representing the partial failure of the operation, since the allies failed to seize it.

In this commemorative coin we also find a portrait of King Guillermo Alejandro, surrounded by his name and the year of issue, all represented with simulated embroidery.
