Last week I showed you the design of the commemorative 2 euro coin that Belgium dedicates to the 50 years of the revolt of '68, today I show you an earlier sketch presented for this same theme that had to be modified.
Our colleague Paul (Euromunter) handles a lot of information about coin projects that are presented to the European Commission, an essential step so that it can be finally coined. The motive to which the coin is to be dedicated and a sketch is presented in the EC so that the members of the Eurozone give their approval to it, or on the contrary they veto it, because the motive or the image represented may be inadequate or offensive for some country.
The issue is that it has achieved the first draft submitted by Belgium for approval and that had to be modified, we do not know the reason why I presented it last week and a few days ago it was published in the Official Gazette of the Union European
Above we see the first reason that was presented for the currency and that has been modified. The reality of why it was modified may never be known, but we can speculate, perhaps the banner with the message "REVUELTA DE ESTUDIANTES" would not fit, or you may know.
The approved design for your minting is the one below. He took the opportunity to confirm that the minting of all the coins of Belgium will be borne by the Dutch mint of Utrecht.
The official theme of the coin is the "50th anniversary of the events of
May 68 in Belgium".

May 68 in Belgium".
The design, which represents students holding a pamphlet and a flag, makes reference to the student demonstrations that took place in Belgium in the context of the socio-cultural changes of May 68. This important national event marked the Belgian national policy and it influenced the subsequent governmental reforms, 50 years ago now.
The mintmark of Utrecht (Mercury's caduceus) is reproduced on the left side next to the Belgian mint mark (the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele). The year of issue «2018» and the country code «BE» are also located on the left, as well as the initials of the currency designer, Luc Luycx «LL».
In the background stands out an auditorium, which constitutes another student reference.
I remind you that the circulation will be 260,000 pieces only available in coincards, except 10,000 that will be in Proof quality presented in its corresponding case.
