Internet creates infinite possibilities and gives instant explanations putting the world at our fingertips. But while we surf the web we leave visible traces that companies use to know our individual preferences by analyzing the large resulting data sets, which means that users lose their privacy and autonomy. Under the name of Big Data, the 2020 coin of the successful Niobium coin series of the Austrian Mint is issued, with which the dangers and disadvantages of the digital revolution are emphasized.

Our lives are digitized to the point that it is virtually impossible to remember how we managed during our previous analog existence and imagine a world in which there are no portable devices. The Internet opens up new possibilities for everyone, but the data collected is usually stored digitally and can be analyzed with special software. Therefore, before going deeper and deeper, we should ask ourselves the following: While I am learning on the Internet, what is the Internet learning about me?

The reverse of the coin shows people under surveillance, which is recognizable by the operating time of 20:20, a figure that also serves as a year of issuance, on the left edge of the outer silver ring. In the foreground of the niobium nucleus, a series of human silhouettes are invaded by squares that symbolize the personal data collected about that person.

In its niobium nucleus, the obverse of Big Data presents a human eye that represents surveillance on the one hand and the biometric method of iris recognition on the other, while the outer silver ring is designed as the objective of a camera.
