The Endangered Species series is a collection of coins created by the Portuguese Mint for the purpose of promoting awareness and preservation of endangered species of national fauna and flora, this year with the issuance of a coin dedicated to the Iberian Wolf, work of the artist Luís Valadares.

In the past, present throughout Portugal, the Wolf-Iberian (Canis lupus signatus) is currently circumscribed to some areas of the north and center of the country, being classified as "Endangered", due to the scarcity of wild prey and activities developed by the human being, which have come to compromise the survival of this emblematic species.

The reverse of the coin shows, occupying the entire central field, the representation of a close-up of the head of a Wolf, which is surrounded, above and right, by the legends «Lobo-Iberian» and «Canis lupus».

On the obverse of the coin, a female is presented with her young, symbolizing the affective side of the life of the wolves. The coat of arms of Portugal and the face value "€ 5" are shown in the upper right quadrant; In the upper right semicircle are the legends "Portugal 2019", "INCM" and the name of the author "Luis Valadares".

This coin with facial of 5 euros can be obtained in two versions with the same design. One coined in silver with Proof quality, and the one that can be obtained at its face value, in cupro-nickel.
