Once again, thanks to our colleague Paul (Euromunter), we are going to get to know the designs of two commemorative 2-euro coins that until now we only knew the theme they would be dedicated to. Both are from Estonia, one will be issued this year and the other will be issued in 2020.
We started with the most anticipated, since the theme could inspire a beautiful design, and frankly I think that's the way it was. This coin will be issued in 2020 and will have as its theme the «200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica».
Predictably by the beginning of 2020, Estonia plans to issue the first commemorative 2-euro coin of the current year, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica. The link of the discovery with Estonia is the Baltic-German sailor Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen, born in Saaremaa, the largest island in Estonia, being one of the first to spot Antarctica and document this event, something that is clearly reflected in the inscriptions presented by the coin, which has as its main motif a sailing ship of the time.
The emission volume is estimated at 750,000 pieces of which 10,000 in BU quality will be presented in a coincard.
The second known design is for the currency that is issued in this 2019, dedicated to the "Centennial of the founding of the University of Tartu as the National University of Estonia".
The University of Tartu is the oldest university in Estonia. It was founded in 1632 by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, when the city of Tartu was part of the vast Swedish territories; at its time, it was the second Swedish university after that of Uppsala (founded in 1477).
In 1919 it became the national university of Estonia, and so it worked until 1940, when it was successively occupied by Soviet and German troops. Since 1944, it has operated in the orbit of the Soviet Union until 1989. Since 1992 it has fully recovered its academic independence.
The design of the coin counts as the main motif with the façade of the university building and legends alluding to the creation of the university in the beginning and the centenary celebrated as the National University of Estonia.
For this coin is announced a circulation of 1 million pieces of which, between 15 to 17 thousand, in BU quality, will come in special presentations. The scheduled issue date is the end of November 2019.
