Chinese Space Program

China's space program began in 1992 with Russian technology, first loaned and then acquired and adapted -the Soyuz thus became the Shenzhou-. In 2003, China sent into space its first taikonauta-, or astronaut, Yang Liwei; in 2008, Zhai Zhigang carried out China's first spacewalk, and in 2011 went into orbit its first space station, the Tiangong-1.

Since then space missions of the Asian power have grown in scope: in October 2014, the unmanned aircraft Xiaofei orbited the Moon for eight days in May Chang'e mission, and a few months ago the head of the Exploration Program Lunar, Wu Weiren announced that by the end of the decade, China hopes to send a ship to unexplored dark side of the moon.

Next year China plans to put into orbit Tiangong-2, its second laboratory space, and has its sights set on the establishment of a permanent manned space station in 2022, the year when the International Space Station provides running out of funds. That would leave China as the only actor with a stable presence in space.
