On October 13, the Italian Mint, the Polygraphic Institute and the State Zecca, issued a new coin to commemorate the centenary of Italian Intelligence. This coin celebrates not only an institutional trajectory but also the maturity of an intelligence model that is currently fully committed to the country's defense.
Italian Intelligence: One Hundred Years of History
In 2025, Italian Intelligence will celebrate one hundred years since the creation of the Military Information Service (SIM) in 1925. Throughout this century, the country's intelligence services have accompanied Italy's political and social history, evolving from a military and reserved structure to a modern, civilian system fully integrated into a democratic framework.
After World War II, the SIM gave way to organizations such as SIFAR and SID, and later, in 1977, to the well-known SISMI and SISDE, which marked the professionalization of the sector. However, the major transformation came with Law 124 of 2007, which created the Information System for the Security of the Republic (Sistema di informazione per la sicurezza della Repubblica), still in force today.
This system is composed of three pillars: the DIS (Dipartment of Security Information), which coordinates and supervises all activities; the AISE, responsible for foreign intelligence; and the AISI, in charge of internal security. Its structure, which reports to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, ensures a balance between operational efficiency, parliamentary oversight, and respect for democratic values.
In recent years, the System has strengthened its role in addressing new global challenges such as international terrorism, cybersecurity, disinformation, and the protection of critical infrastructure. It has also promoted institutional transparency initiatives, such as the periodic publication of official reports and outreach campaigns, with the aim of bringing a culture of security closer to the public and promoting modern, legal, and responsible intelligence.
The obverse of the coin displays, at the top, the logo of the Information System for the Security of the Republic, representing DIS, AISI, and AISE; in the center, the heraldic shields of AISE, on the left, and AISI, on the right. At the bottom, the "100," referring to the centenary, is located in the center of the dates 1925 and 2025. In the background, the historic SISMI logo. At the top, the inscription "CENTENARY OF THE BIRTH OF ITALIAN INTELLIGENCE," while at the bottom, also on the edge, the inscription "ITALIAN REPUBLIC."
The reverse of the coin features a representation of the plan of "Forte Braschi," the current headquarters of the Italian Foreign Intelligence and Security Agency. On the right, the designer's signature "EFMOD" appears, while on the left, the initial "R," identifying the Rome Mint. At the top of the design, we see the inscription "FORTE BRASCHI ROMA," while at the bottom, the face value "5 EURO" and the year of issue "2025" appear.
