Today, October 28, 2025, the Monnaie de Paris will issue its second commemorative €2 coin of the year, dedicated to one of its most iconic monuments: Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. With a mintage of 20 million pieces , most of which are intended for circulation, this issue celebrates not only the rich heritage of this Gothic symbol, but also its recent rebirth following the devastating fire of 2019.
Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris
Built in the 12th century under the direction of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral is a jewel of Gothic architecture that has dominated the Île de la Cité for more than eight centuries. This masterpiece, characterized by its imposing flying buttresses and spectacular rose windows, is a testament to the mastery of medieval builders and has been the scene of numerous historic events, such as the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
This year, the Monnaie de Paris is paying tribute to the reopening of Notre-Dame to the public by minting a commemorative 2-euro coin, immortalizing the lines of this jewel of Gothic art.
Coin design
The obverse of the coin features a volumetric representation of the cathedral's west façade, with its rose window emerging between the two towers. The official logo of Notre-Dame de Paris also appears on the ribbon.
In the center, the western façade is visible from the parvis (the esplanade in front of the cathedral). The central rose window, one of its most recognizable elements, dominates the composition, while the recently rebuilt spire rises in the background as a symbol of hope and continuity. On the left, the year 2025, the initials RF (French Republic), and the Monnaie de Paris symbol appear.
On the right, the text "NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS" appears vertically, accompanied by the symbol of the Engraver General.
Different ways to get the coin
As I mentioned at the beginning, the total print run is 20 million pieces, distributed as follows:Coins in rolls of 25 pieces
The Monnaie de Paris will put on sale 8,000 rolls of 25 coins in Fleur-de-Côte quality, at a price of 63 euros per roll, which represents a total of 200,000 pieces.
Currency in Coincard
15,000 BU quality coins will also be offered, presented in coincard, at a price of 12 euros each.
Proof quality coin
In Proof quality —and presented in a collector's case— 15,000 coins will be sold at a price of 25 euros each.
Euroset with the commemorative coin
This Euroset will include a commemorative coin along with the 1 cent to 1 euro coins minted in 2025, all in BU quality. A total of 1,000 coins will be issued, priced at 57 euros each.
The rest of the coins
As you may have noticed, there's still a significant amount missing before reaching 20 million coins. The remaining coins are expected to be distributed in rolls of 25 coins for general circulation.
It remains to be confirmed whether this distribution will take place simultaneously with the initial sale or at a later date.
