The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) has issued a new 10-levs commemorative coin dedicated to the 125th anniversary of emergency healthcare in Bulgaria. This issue is part of a series celebrating historical and social milestones of great significance for the country.

125 years of history: emergency medical care in Bulgaria

The issuance of this commemorative coin not only celebrates a round number, but also pays tribute to one of the most important healthcare institutions in the country .

The origins: the Bulgarian Red Cross and the first nurses

The history of emergency medical care in Bulgaria begins in 1900, when the Bulgarian Red Cross Society founded a small specialized hospital called the Red Cross in Sofia. This center offered free medical care and also housed the country's first nursing school, known as the Holy Trinity Sisters of Mercy Society.

Its first director and attending physician was Dr. Petar Orahovats (1900–1901), and its activities were governed by internal regulations that were pioneering for its time.

Innovations and expansion

In 1909, the hospital moved to a new building designed by architect Kiril Marichkov, equipped with the first ambulances in Bulgaria.

In 1935, by decree of Tsar Boris III, the specialized unit “The Emergency Medical Care” was created in Sofia, thus marking the official birth of organized emergency services in the country.

After World War II, in 1945, the hospital was reorganized and became the main emergency care center in Bulgaria. In the late 1940s, it was renamed "The Emergency City Hospital."

Modernization and recognition

In 1951, the institution was transformed into the NI Pirogov Institute of Emergency Medical Care, which 50 years later would achieve the status of a university hospital.

Currently, emergency medical care in Bulgaria is a shared responsibility between doctors, medical students, paramedics, nurses, Bulgarian Red Cross volunteers and ambulance drivers.

There are emergency care centers throughout the country, specialized hospital services, and mobile units. According to the Bulgarian Health Law, emergency care is completely free for all citizens.

The Coin

The obverse of the coin shows, in the center left, the logo of the Bulgarian National Bank accompanied by a ribbon with the year “1879”, which refers to the year of the BNB's foundation.

On the right, the number "10" stands out, representing the coin's face value. The year of issue, "2025," appears at the top, while the inscription "ЛЕВА" (levs) appears at the bottom.

On the outer edge, the legend “БЪЛГАРСКА” (Bulgarian) at the top and “НАРОДНА БАНКА” (National Bank) at the bottom surround the composition.

The reverse depicts two hands clasped together forming a cross, a universal symbol of aid and medical care. On either side of the central image are the years "1900" and "2025," marking the 125-year period since the creation of the first emergency care services in the country.

On the circumference, the inscription in Bulgarian “125 ГОДИНИ СПЕШНА МЕДИЦИНСКА ПОМОЩ В БЪЛГАРИЯ” means “125 Years of Emergency Medical Care in Bulgaria”.
