Although it may seem somewhat strange at this time, I can now provide you with information and images about the commemorative 2 euro coin that Monaco will issue in 2024, a coin with which the "500th Anniversary of the Principality of Monaco" will be celebrated.

As in previous years, the number of minted pieces will be very limited, in 2024 there will be 15,000 and as is also usual, all in Proof quality. The issue date has not been revealed.

The coin bears the image of Charles V, the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire who secured the independence of the principality by placing it under his protection in 1524.

We know all this information thanks to the fact that Prince Albert visited the Pessac mint this week, where together with the director of the Monnaie de Paris, Marc Schwartz, they minted the first coins.

Treaties of Burgos and Tordesillas that grant autonomy to Monaco and recognize the Grimaldi.

The Grimaldis, although converted by force of circumstances into tireless warriors, do not forget their skills as skilled businessmen and politicians. For this reason, AUGUSTINE I of Monaco (1523-1532), skillfully decides to escape his fiercest enemies through the protection of the powerful Spanish kings who dominate Europe. A consequence of this stratagem will be the treaties of Burgos and Tordesillas that will grant, in 1524, autonomy to this small state with the consequent displeasure of the Italians and French. Thus a tiny country was born that has an exceptional protector: Emperor Charles V who recognizes the sovereignty of the Grimaldis over Monaco.
