After France changed the design of its 1 and 2 euro coins in 2022, the gradual renewal of its series of coins in circulation will continue in 2024. On this occasion it will be the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins that will change completely, going from the same design for the three values, the Sower, to three dedicated to three important female characters: Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker and Marie Curie.

The disappearing design

Since the first issuance of euro coins in France, the values of 10, 20 and 50 centimes have included the planter motif, a constant in the history of the French franc. Designed by Laurent Jorlo, "this image, timeless and modern at the same time, represents a France that remains true to itself, while integrating into Europe."

New 10 cent coin

The 10 cent coin represents an icon of the women's rights struggle, Simone Veil. She was the first woman elected president of the European Parliament, in 1979. She is considered a figure of feminism after legalizing abortion in France in 1975, when she held the position of Minister of Health. As a sign of recognition in France, a commemorative 2 euro coin was issued in 2018 dedicated to this great woman who also had to live firsthand the tragedy of the Nazi Holocaust.

New 20 cent coin

The 10 cent coin features the naturalized French singer and dancer, Josephine Baker, a symbol of women's liberation, the fight against racism and a member of the Resistance during the Nazi occupation.

New 50 cent coin

The 50 cent coin is in honor of Marie Curie, a Polish physicist and chemist who became a French national. A pioneer in the field of radioactivity, she is the first and only person to receive two Nobel Prizes in different scientific specialties: Physics and Chemistry. She was also the first woman to hold the position of professor at the University of Paris.

How to get these new coins

From January 1, 2024, these new coins can begin to circulate, although it may actually take several months to do so, since the Monnaie de Paris will first try to sell the 2024 eurosets in their different versions and presentations, which by the way will be announces that they will go on sale next December 7.

If you are impatient you can buy some Euroset, which are already advertised for 39 euros for BU quality and 80 for Proof quality. Both will have the eight regular circulation coins with a mint date of 2024.

When can euro coin designs be modified?

According to the European Union regulation on nominal values and technical specifications of euro coins intended for circulation, Eurozone Member States are authorized to modify the designs used on the national faces of euro coins once every fifteen years. normal coins intended for circulation. There is also another possibility for a design change, which can occur when there is a change in the Head of State to which they refer, without the need for any specific period of time to have passed.

Since 2017, countries that adopted the euro in 2002, if they wish, have the opportunity to change the designs of all or part of their coin series. Some have already done so due to the change of Head of State (Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Vatican and Monaco) and others, like San Marino, for no specific reason, except for the business of minting coins with other designs to do business. among collectors.
