Above the Clouds is the name for the third scale and third coin in the coin series, Reaching for Heaven, which is issued by the Austrian Mint. It celebrates how the dream of flying came true for the masses with the development of commercial air travel. The world's largest passenger jet, the Airbus A380 is the ultimate symbol of this phenomenon.
Commercial air travel has come a long way since the first commercial flights were launched between Berlin and Weimar in 1919, although the aircraft's narrow, unheated cabins could only accommodate a handful of passengers, who sometimes had to be heavy to make sure the payload is not too heavy for takeoff. The flights were, therefore, a kind of adventure and the emergency landings quite common. But by 1928, the German airline Lufthansa was already offering a full menu to its passengers aboard the Junkers JU 52. The British 20-seat Vickers VC 1 Viking took things further in the decade after World War II when the transatlantic flights.
High-capacity aircraft put air travel, and eventually long-haul destinations, within reach of the masses beginning in the 1970s. With its two passenger decks, the 850-seat Airbus A380 entered service in 2007. On the reverse of the coin, an A380 is shown landing at a busy airport, while on the obverse is a Vickers VC 1 Viking, along with the Golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and a few palm trees, all of which symbolize the long distance tourism.
