This year marks the 45th anniversary of an event that became known as the "Carnation Revolution", giving rise to the current Portuguese democracy and the consequent recognition of the rights and fundamental freedoms in the country.
The Portuguese Mint pays tribute to this historic landmark with a commemorative collection coin designed by the sculptor José Aurelio.
The reverse of the coin shows in the center a red carnation on which the phrase "April 25" is formed on its leaves. At the top, there are the legends "1974", "45 years" and "2019"; In the lower part, the legends "Freedom" and "Democracy".
The obverse shows in the center the face value of the coin, in green, and five shields with five quinas each, symbolizing the five Muslim kings that King Afonso Henriques defeated in the battle of Ourique. At the top, the legend "Portugal"; In the lower part, the legends "INCM", "€ uro" (in green) and the name of the author "José Aurelio".
This coin with facial of 5 euros can be obtained in two versions with the same design. One minted in silver with Proof quality and the one that can be obtained at its face value, in cupro-nickel.
