In August 1768, Captain James Cook and his crew set sail at HM Bark Endeavor, beginning what would become a three-year voyage of discovery. It was the first of these three trips for the intrepid pioneer, during which he would circumnavigate the world twice. His spirit of adventure helped fill in the blanks on the world map and improve our knowledge of new places, towns, plants and even other planets.
250 years later, The Royal Mint invites us on a three-year adventure through coin history. A series of three 2-pound coins, issued one per year between 2018 to 2020, will explore Captain Cook's voyage of discovery in real time. The coins feature three intriguing designs by sculptor Gary Breeze, which combine to create a unique and complete image that tells the story of Captain Cook's journey.
The design of the first coin is centered on the stern of Captain Cook's famous ship, HM Bark Endeavor, which sailed in the summer of 1768. The flag and flag of the United Kingdom are shown, while the city of Plymouth is between the dates and the name of Cook. The distinctive signature of Captain Cook is also represented and the numbers "250" mark the anniversary.
The obverse shows the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II in a design by Jody Clark and the face value of the coin 2 Pounds (Pounds).
