The Austrian Mint has put on sale today, November 22, the fifth coin of the series Colorful Creatures dedicated to the Wolf. This series of coins has the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented in the piece shine in the dark.
The oldest member of the dog family, the wolf, is also the only Canis species that has a habitat that encompasses both the Old and the New Worlds. This and the long association of the wolf with humans can explain its unique place in mythology. Admired and feared in equal measure, the Canis Lupus comes alive in the fifth coin of the creatures of colors in the dark.
The obverse of the coin shows a pair of wolves howling under the moon, while the reverse represents the wolf among the silhouettes of the other 11 animals that appear in the series of the Colorful Creatures.
For this series, a face value of 3 euros is used, which has never before been used by the Austrian Mint, and is also legal currency in the country. For three years one of these coins is being issued, approximately every three months.
With a maximum circulation of 50,000 pieces, the coins are presented in special packages of ten coins, designed for distributors and individually for collectors.
