Almost a year ago I had the first news that the National Coin and Stamp Factory was planning to issue the first pure silver coin of 1 kilo. Today I can give you more information and a large image of a sketch of this peculiar coin, and the curious reason that for some may be the subject to which it will be dedicated.

The theme chosen for the first currency of these characteristics is "History of the Dollar", referring to the US dollar and the Spanish origin of this. Apart from having a kilo of pure silver, the diameter of the same will also be of great proportions, it is announced that it will have 100 millimeters.

Clicking on the images becomes even bigger.

The obverse, as you see in the image above, will have the effigy of King Felipe VI in the center, surrounded by different Spanish and American currencies, precursors of the dollar. The text HISTORY OF DOLLAR shown in Spanish and English in a clear nod to potential buyers outside the country.

The reverse shows in the center the Columns of Hercules that flank the shield and support the motto Plus Ultra in the shield of Spain, in addition to the logo and mint mark of the FNMT. Around are more precursory currencies of the dollar, in addition to the face value 300 euro and the year of issue 2017.

To this day I have no idea when it will be put on sale, nor of its price. The first time we can see a minted coin will be during the World Money Fair of Berlin 2017, to be held from February 3 to 5, where the FNMT may have it displayed on its stand.

The Spanish origin of the dollar

The real of eight, the most widely circulated currency in the Spanish Empire, was the origin of the US dollar. The real ones of eight were circulating currency not only in America, but also in Asia.

But the Spanish currency also circulated in the Thirteen British Colonies of North America, long before they declared their independence. Due to the difficulty of navigations, it was much easier to obtain from the close and accredited real of eight coined in Mexico than of British pounds, so that in the Thirteen Colonies the Spanish currency circulated normally, and was known first as Spanish Thaler, then to spanish daller, and later to spanish dollar.

When the time came for the emancipation of the colonies, the new United States formally disconnected from the British currency and found it necessary to mint its own currency. But it was difficult to introduce a new value in commerce, and so he resorted to the one that then possessed him to the highest degree in the whole world: the hard weight, the real Spanish currency of eight.

There were many of these coins in circulation, and they had the guarantee of their prestige and their refined silver content, so that the real of eight of the Spanish monarchy became the basis of the United States currency.

The text is an excerpt from the article published by the Hispanist and writer Borja Cardelús, in the digital newspaper El Imparcial. I recommend you read the whole thing.
