On November 3, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a new commemorative coin entitled "The Year of the Horse," dedicated to one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. With a face value of 5 hryvnias and minted in alpaca or German silver, this coin celebrates the beginning of 2026 under the sign of the Horse, a symbol of energy, independence, and love of life.
In traditional Chinese astrology, the Horse represents the seventh sign of the zodiac and belongs to the yang type, associated with the element of fire. This sign reflects dynamism, decisiveness, and a desire for freedom, but also a certain impulsiveness and a tendency toward risk. Its restless and indomitable spirit is translated on the coin through a composition full of movement and symbolic power.
The obverse features the coat of arms of Ukraine and the semicircular inscription "УКРАЇНА" (Ukraine). Against a plain background, the twelve symbols of the Chinese calendar are arranged in a circle, at the center of which is a stylized clock pointing to the Horse, the emblem of the year 2026. Above the clock hand is the number "2026," while at the bottom is the inscription "5 ГРИВЕНЬ" (5 hryvnias). The design is completed with symbols of the four seasons, inspired by Ukrainian decorative art: a snowflake, a flower, a berry, and a leaf, accompanied by the mint mark of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint.
