In 2025, the Royal Canadian Mint will unveil a new commemorative $2 coin honoring one of the nation's most solemn symbols: Canada's Unknown Soldier. This issue marks the 25th anniversary of the repatriation of the remains of a Canadian soldier killed in the First World War, a gesture that a quarter of a century ago deeply moved the nation and strengthened the bond between memory, service, and sacrifice.
A return full of meaning
In 2000, the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier were exhumed from the Cabaret-Rouge cemetery in France and transported to Ottawa. There, they were laid to rest with full military honors in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, across from the National War Memorial.
This symbolic act, which commemorates all Canadians who lost their lives in service and whose names remain unknown, became a point of national unity. Since then, the site has witnessed countless expressions of respect and gratitude toward those who “are gone, but never forgotten.”
The art behind the coin
The coin was designed by sculptor Mary-Ann Liu, the same artist who created the bronze reliefs that adorn the original tomb. On the reverse, Liu depicts a street-level view of the tomb, framed by the silhouettes of four sentinels. Each figure represents the men and women of the Canadian Forces who have served, are serving, or will serve in defense of their country.
The central motif, serene and solemn, invites contemplation. In the colored version, a red poppy stands out in the foreground: a universal symbol of remembrance that, in Canada, every November evokes those who have fallen in all wars.
The obverse, meanwhile, shows the portrait of King Charles III , a work by the artist Steven Rosati , accompanied by the inscription “CANADA 2025 – 2 DOLLARS”.
Two versions for the same memory
The Royal Canadian Mint has issued this piece in two versions:
A standard, colorless version that reproduces the original design in metal;
And a colored version, where the red poppy adds a vibrant and emotional touch.
Both versions will circulate nationwide, but special collector editions are also available. A total of approximately three million coins will be minted, two million of which will be colored and one million uncolored.
A tribute that travels in your pocket
Beyond its numismatic value, this coin is intended to fulfill a profoundly symbolic function. As it passes from hand to hand, it will remind Canadians every day of the sacrifice of those who did not return home.
The Royal Canadian Mint expressed it with a phrase that sums up the spirit of the issue:
“Every time you receive this coin, remember those who served and never returned. They have departed, but they will never be forgotten.”
