Tuesday, August 26, the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) will issue the fourth coin in the "Fauna of Ecosystems" series, a collection that highlights the country's natural wealth. This time, the featured coin is the "Anole Lizard," a species typical of the dry tropical forest. As with previous releases, the coin will be available in both a collector's version and in regular circulation.

Design and Features of the Coin

The coin, with a face value of 50 colones (approximately 9 euro cents), features a notable distinction between its versions. The collector's version has colored details, while the circulation version does not. This coin is part of the Central Bank of Costa Rica's new monetary cone, which means its size and characteristics differ from the 50 colones currently in circulation.

The reverse of the new coin features the text "Tropical Dry Forest" and the original scientific name "Lagartija o anolis" and "Norops sericeus." As part of the visual elements, the lizard is placed on a portion of the map of the tropical dry forest, as well as the year "2023," the year approved by the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Costa Rica.

On the obverse of the coin, the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica" are read, accompanied by three raised bars that allow for easy tactile identification.

About the lizard or anole (Norops sericeus)

The anole lizard is a characteristic species of Costa Rica's dry tropical forest . It is a small, slender reptile with a body covered in tiny scales. Its legs are long and slender, while its very narrow, elongated tail gives it great agility when moving between branches and bushes.

The color of its back varies between shades of light brown and gray , allowing it to easily camouflage itself in its surroundings. Adult males also have a distinctive feature: a drooping dewlap that ranges from yellow to deep orange and displays a circular purple spot in the center.

This species lives primarily in the northwest of the country , at altitudes reaching up to 650 meters above sea level. It is arboreal , although it is also often found in gardens, hedges, and areas near human presence.

The lizard or anole is oviparous , with each clutch consisting of a single egg. This occurs only during the rainy season (May to November). Its diet is highly varied, consisting primarily of insects and other arthropods , making it an important natural pest controller in its ecosystem.
