On August 18, 2025, the Bank of Russia issued a commemorative 50-ruble (0.53 euro) coin to commemorate the so-called Defender of the Fatherland Year.
The initiative is part of the country's numismatic tradition, which annually releases commemorative pieces related to historical, cultural, or military milestones. On this occasion, the coin pays tribute to the memory of World War II veterans and features on its reverse a representation of the Saur-Mogila Memorial Complex , erected in commemoration of the liberation of Donbas by the Red Army in 1943.
According to official information from the Bank of Russia, the purpose of this minting is to “preserve historical memory and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 .”
Coin design
Obverse: The central denomination “50 RUBLEY” (50 rubles) is depicted, with security features showing the number “50” and the inscription “RUB” (visible at a different viewing angle). The outer ring bears the inscription “BANK ROSSII” (Bank of Russia) at the top and the year of issue “2025” at the bottom. Stylized laurel and oak branches complete the design.
Reverse: Features a relief of a fragment of the Saur-Mogila Memorial Complex. On the outer ring, the relief inscriptions read “ГОД ЗАЩИТНИКА ОТЕЧЕСТВА” (Year of the Defender of the Fatherland) at the top and “САУР-МОГИЛА” (Saur-Mogila) at the bottom.
