On August 20, the Czech National Bank (CNB) unveiled a new silver commemorative coin from the "Institutions of the Czech Republic" collection. This series is dedicated to highlighting the work of authorities and agencies essential to the proper functioning of the state. This time, the newly issued coin pays tribute to the Customs Administration, a key institution in protecting the economic, security, and social interests of the Czech Republic.

Customs Administration of the Czech Republic

The Customs Administration of the Czech Republic is an armed security force and administrative body subordinate to the Ministry of Finance. It has the status of a police authority and the power to conduct criminal proceedings. Its main mission is to protect the fiscal interests of the Czech Republic and the internal market of the European Union, primarily through the control of goods entering its territory.

Traditionally, the Customs Administration is responsible for collecting tariffs, excise taxes, and, in part, VAT, as well as supervising international trade. It also protects public health and the environment from illegal or dangerous products. Since 2017, it has also overseen the gambling sector and has performed other oversight functions, for example in the areas of tolls, weapons, and the protection of intellectual property rights.

The Czech Customs Administration is commemorated on this new commemorative coin with motifs inspired by its routine functions.

The obverse of the coin features a composition of the various heraldic animals from the Coat of Arms of the Czech Republic, framed by a design of four arrows symbolizing the circulation of goods. It is complemented by a range of banknotes of different denominations alluding to the collection of tariffs, taxes, and fees.

The name of the issuing country, "ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA" (Czech Republic), appears on the top edge of the coin, followed by the year of issue, "2025" below. The face value of the coin is found on the bottom edge of the design, and slightly higher on the right is the Czech Mint's mark, consisting of the letters "Č" and "M".

The reverse of the coin depicts a truck with a high-capacity mobile X-ray machine, inside which is the logo of the Czech Customs Administration. The upper part of the design also features the inscription "CELNÍ SPRÁVA" and the initials of the coin's designer, "VD" (Veronika Durová).
