The second coin in the "Traditional and Modern" coin series , to be issued by the Austrian Mint soon, pays tribute to traditional costumes and garments that are part of the country's cultural heritage, crafted from materials native to the region. This time, the new issue is dedicated to one of the most iconic garments: lederhosen (leather trousers).
No other garment so powerfully reflects the Austrian identity and spirit. With its rustic elegance and timeless charm, each pair of lederhosen is unique: it holds memories, tells stories, and symbolizes the inseparable bond between people and nature.
Originally designed to withstand the harsh Alpine climate and the rigors of farming and forestry, lederhosen were made from durable deerskin or chamois. Their durability gave them a long lifespan, making them faithful companions that, in many families, were passed down from generation to generation. Today, in addition to their practical function, many styles feature intricate embroidery with plant and animal motifs—symbols of a deep connection with nature, resilience, and regional pride.
Whether at folk festivals, family gatherings, or in everyday life, lederhosen connects the past, present, and future, cementing themselves as a true cultural icon.
The reverse of the coin depicts a man dressed in richly embroidered lederhosen and other traditional attire. He is seated, with his hat, clothing, and walking stick highlighted in color. Behind him, a horizontal band decorated with a deer completes the scene.
The obverse features tools and products typical of the art of leatherwork. On the left, in horizontal perspective, a traditional belt adorned with feather embroidery, accompanied by a sewing awl in the foreground.
In addition to the silver coin with color application and Proof quality —the one seen in the images above—the collection includes two other variants: one also in silver, colorless and in BU quality , and a third in copper, available in Austria at its face value.
