On November 3, the Bank of Latvia announces the issuance of a quite original coin, shaped like a leaf, with which it wants to raise awareness of the benefits of ecology and everything that surrounds it. This coin has been developed as an environmentally friendly project, recycled silver has been used for its minting, and recycled paper to produce its packaging and informational materials.

Ecology has become an important topic on our daily agenda due to the substantial changes that affect our environment. With an increasing number of people moving to urban areas, one of the most important tasks of urban planning is to make cities as pleasant to live in and as green as possible. This has given rise to the concept of a sustainable city where everything is in balance with the environment.

Unlike many other big cities, Riga, the capital of Latvia, is comparatively green. Green areas improve the microclimate as they purify the air and water, thus improving human health. They are both a cultural heritage and part of an easy economic solution to reduce human impact on the environment.

Just as a leaf has its venation pattern, a city also has a network of streets, overpasses, and highways. Riga's street network has been designed for people, connecting them with places in the urban environment, similar to the veins of a leaf that carry substances through it. Linden is one of the most common and hardy trees that you can find in Riga. At the same time, this tree, which lives between 200 and 300 years, symbolizes one of the city's most precious resources. Linden trees absorb large amounts of pollutants and give city dwellers clean air in return. In a year, a healthy tree produces oxygen for at least 10 people. Today, this common and simple component of nature is highly appreciated.

Urban nature is extremely beneficial but also very vulnerable. This is the balance that humans must achieve to preserve life in their urban environment. We can all contribute to the configuration of a greener and healthier urban environment by changing or adapting our daily habits.

The coin is shaped like a linden leaf, and its obverse features a pattern of the venation of a leaf. The inscription "5 euro" is placed obliquely in a semicircle in the center to the left of the line connecting the base to the tip of the blade, the year "2020" is shown at the bottom and the inscription "Latvija" in the center to the right of the line.

On the reverse the street network of Riga symbolically represents the leaf rib.
