The America the Beautiful Quarters series of coins, dedicated to national parks and emblematic places of the country, is coming to an end. On November 16, the issuance of a new piece of 25 cents as a circulation coin is announced, being the penultimate of the series and last of this 2020 with which it is intended to value the Tallgrass Prairies National Reserve.

The preserve located in Kansas is the only site within the National Park Service (NPS) dedicated to the rich natural history of the tallgrass prairie. Spanning nearly 11,000 acres, it is located in the heart of the Flint Hills, the largest remaining stretch of tall grass prairie in North America. Established in 1996, part of its mission is to interpret the cattle legacy of the region; a part of the reserve is still pasture for cattle.

The tallgrass meadow is an incredibly diverse ecosystem. The reserve is home to more than 500 species of plants. Prominent grasses such as large blue stalk, Indian, rod, and small blue stalk appear to dominate the plant community, but are outnumbered by the diversity of herbaceous plants (wild flowers). Fauna ranges from large grazing animals like deer, bison, and cattle to a multitude of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other animals. Grassland birds, such as the prairie rooster (a type of grouse), which have lost much of their native habitat, are of particular interest.

Emily Damstra's design depicts a Regal Fritillary butterfly flying skyward against a background of herbaceous plants and grasses, an iconic landscape of the Tallgras Prairies National Reserve. The inscriptions are "TALLGRASS PRAIRIE", "KANSAS", "2020" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM".

On the obverse of all coins in the series, President George Washington is depicted, in a version restored by John Flanagan in 2010 from the original portrait used in 1932 in the Washington Quarter.
